COVID19 pandemic situation has shaken the whole humankind to the peak. Many people has relearned their habits and realized they can adapt to any changes needed if circumstances demand. Living is ultimately the question on how to exist. Making a living out of anything will be acceptable when life is in question. So the nature of humans is going to change based on his / her requirements in life. Travelers ended up as expats discovering destination in search of a good living; rather easy living and first comers always stood as gypsies making example and guidelines for the newcomers.
Expat population in the Middle East are not different from this. The rat race for earning, seeking skills, identifying potential, empowering and ultimately making a comparatively larger income brings them to a safe existence in homeland. Irrespective of cast and creed, this had been continuing from past many years and will go on as I presume.
Risks in life come in many unexpected ways. Sometime it might be in requirements from dependents or from self-ego (self-esteem). Spending happens mostly in impulsive decisions and any loses are realized at a very later stage when return become extremely difficult. Financial stability becomes an important part of life in this way. Having a regular income will make one to spend without proper planning. However the planning after any calamities will have a learning point for not to repeat this in the next time. Being left over without any resources will cause discovery of unseen potentials. This was evident in the current pandemic all over the world.
Many companies have short-sized their resources and staff were either laid off or asked to go on leave. Some companies closed down their operation until further notice. When an income is stopped, panic arises. Marketing budgets for companies were zeroed down. This has resulted many graphic professionals to search other domains for making a living. But there are few those who do not quit in any situation.
Art and artists have a great role to play in any panic situation. Conveying a message becomes very effective through captivating images so that the observer will have a vivid visualization in mind for quite a long time. Awareness to fight any battle against unforeseen situation, be it a war or a virus will need excessive efforts in preparing mindsets of the common public. If anyone is effected by disease, they must be attended for appropriate treatment for cure. At the same time the same person (patient as identified) need to be educated on the potential severity of his illness and the needful precautions to be taken during and after the treatment period. Often this becomes a kind of hospitalization or isolation. While an artist if gone through such situation will have an abundant incidents to relate his mind and relay his feelings or feedback to others. Medium can be audio or visual or even a small note so that it reaches few others who might be in similar mental conditions.
During normal conditions when a person being isolated behaves as true as possible. Best or worst of them will uncover during that time. Few observed incidents in recent COVID19 lock down days were very much interesting.
Wearing a facial mask became mandatory during the lock down period. Purchasing masks may not be practical for any middle income group family members. But as restrictions imposed, people started getting used to it and wearing a face mask is the new normal now! This has kept a shade on expression of a person and caused mixed responses in community. Some bright mind had worked an idea of printing lips and nose portion of face on the masks. It had caught attention of people looking for the same kind of masks for themselves. People really did not mind spending money to get a face printed mask for them. All those who utilized their skills trying to get the mask materials and facilitating the printing have gained considerable revenue during this uncertain times.
While buying facemasks and throwing them after usage for four hours (as advised by medicos) may not be possible for common public. So their brainstorm reached a new set of mask preparation strategy as “stitching own double layer cloth masks”. Well known national award winning actor (Mr.Indrans) have taken initiative in showing practically how easy that could be. It is really wonderful to see people respond positively during a crisis time.
Later to this we have noticed big brands started selling these PPE products in their various selling platforms. A lot of workforce being benefitted out of this opportunity as well.
Another incident noticed were the infographics prepared by some skillful artists encouraging public on how to have safe distancing and social distancing practice. Banners and picture notes were seen a lot in the common social networking platforms in this regard. Many people have benefitted from those circulars as well. In some cases governments have utilized those graphics for public awareness campaigns also.
Mental health is very important at all times and especially when such panic attack happens, many stranded people might lose their consciousness or react in different manner resulting severe damages. Taking this point, many visionaries came forward exploiting the “opportunity of training minds”. While onsite trainings were not practical, virtual world took over supporting remotely. A smart phone or computer could conduct a healthy session of counselling classes for groups as well as for individuals. Online services became an essential commodity now extending job opportunities for software professionals.
Thus every situation has a positive side
and seldom have we noticed it.
